Private Roy William Smith

On 20 October 1940, aboard the Queen Mary, Roy sailed out of Sydney Harbour, bound for overseas duty.

 

On 12 April 1941, the 2/5 AGH established a base hospital at Ekali, Greece.

 

On 27 April 1941, the Hospital was captured by the advancing German Army and 167 personnel became prisoners of war. Roy was among these.

 

He was to remain a POW until his repatriation on 19 May 1945, finally returning to Australia on 24 July 1945.

 

His tour of duty was five years and nine months. Roy was a prisoner of war for a period of four years.
